ISO 14001:2004 Certification/Registration
Many of the requirements of 14001
significantly correspond to those of 9001. To attain
14001 registration
simultaneously or as an “add-on” to previous
9001 registration a company has to identify & address
(at minimum) the following additional requirements:-
Environmental
Policy
Top Management must define a policy that is appropriate
to the environmental impact of their activities, demonstrating
commitment to continually reduce the environmental impact
of these activities, providing the framework to set & measure
appropriate environmental objectives & targets.
Environmental
Aspects/Legal & other requirements The company must identify & regularly evaluate the
environmental aspects/effects of all its activities,
determining & regularly evaluating current or changes
to relevant environmental legislation & any other
requirements to which it subscribes.
Definitions:
Environment - surroundings in which you operate, including
air, water, land, natural resources, flora, fauna,
humans and their interrelation.
Environmental Aspect - element of your activities,
products or services that can interact with the environment
Significant Environmental Aspect - an environmental
aspect that has or can have a significant environmental
impact.
Environmental Impact - any change to the environment,
whether adverse or beneficial, wholly or partially
resulting from your company’s activities, products
or services.
Environmental
Objectives, Targets & Programme
The
company must set measurable objectives & targets
for reducing its impact on the environment directly
relating to their significant environmental aspects,
relevant environmental legislation & any other
requirements to which it subscribes – consistent
with its Environmental Policy. A programme for achievement
must be established & maintained.
Operational
Control
The company must establish written procedures where
their absence could cause deviation from its environmental
policy, objectives & targets or negatively impact
the environment. Emergency
Preparedness & Response
The company must establish, implement & maintain
a procedure to identify potential emergency situations & accidents
that could have an impact on the environment. The company
must prepare & where appropriate, test their response
to such situations.
