OHSAS 18001 Certification/Registration

Many of the requirements of 18001 significantly correspond to those of 9001. To attain 18001 registration simultaneously or as an “add-on” to previous 9001 or 14001 registrations a company has to identify & address (at minimum) the following additional requirements: –

- Health & Safety Policy

Top Management must define an occupational health and safety policy appropriate to the nature and scale of the organization’s OH&S risks. Policy must demonstrate commitment to prevent injury or ill health in the pursuit of their activities, providing the framework to set & measure appropriate health & safety objectives & targets.

- Health & Safety Hazards/Legal & other requirements

The company must identify & regularly evaluate the environmental hazards of all its activities, determining & regularly evaluating current or changes to relevant health & safety legislation & any other requirements to which it subscribes.

A procedure for ongoing hazard identification, risk assessment & determination of controls & training needs must be established, implemented & maintained.

- Health & Safety Objectives, Targets & Planning

The company must set measurable objectives & targets to reduce & prevent injury or ill health. A programme for achievement, including responsibility, time frame & means of achievement must be established & maintained.

- Implementation & Operation

The company must clearly define the Resources, Roles, Responsibility & Accountability essential to establish, implement & improve the OH&S Management System.

- Operational Control

The company must determine the activities associated with their identified hazards & establish the necessary controls and/or documented procedures to manage both risk or change where the absence of such control could cause deviation from its OH&S policy, objectives or targets.

- Emergency Preparedness & Response

The company must establish, implement & maintain a procedure to identify & respond to potential emergency situations & accidents that could have an impact. The company must prepare & where appropriate, test their response to such situations.
